Termination of flips

20 years old · traced to

Work over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 00. A pair (X,B)(X,B) consists of a normal variety XX and an effective R\mathbb R-divisor BB such that KX+BK_X+B is R\mathbb R-Cartier. For a log resolution f ⁣:Y→Xf\colon Y\to X write

KY+BY=f∗(KX+B),K_Y+B_Y=f^*(K_X+B),

where BYB_Y is the sum of the strict transform of BB and an exceptional divisor. The pair is klt (Kawamata log terminal) if every coefficient of BYB_Y is <1<1 for every such ff. It is lc (log canonical) if every coefficient is ≤1\le1.

Let (X,B)(X,B) be a klt pair with XX Q\mathbb Q-factorial, projective over a variety SS. A (KX+B)(K_X+B)-flip over SS is a diagram X→φZ←φ+X+X\xrightarrow{\varphi}Z\xleftarrow{\varphi^+}X^+ over SS with the following properties:

  • φ\varphi is the contraction of a (KX+B)(K_X+B)-negative extremal ray of NE‾(X/S)\overline{NE}(X/S);
  • φ\varphi and φ+\varphi^+ are small (isomorphisms in codimension one) projective birational morphisms;
  • KX++B+K_{X^+}+B^+ is φ+\varphi^+-ample, where B+B^+ is the strict transform of BB.

The pair (X+,B+)(X^+,B^+) is again Q\mathbb Q-factorial and klt.

Conjecture (termination of flips). For every nn, there is no infinite sequence

(X0,B0)⇢(X1,B1)⇢(X2,B2)⇢⋯(X_0,B_0)\dashrightarrow(X_1,B_1)\dashrightarrow(X_2,B_2)\dashrightarrow\cdots

of (KXi+Bi)(K_{X_i}+B_i)-flips over SS starting from a Q\mathbb Q-factorial klt pair of dimension nn.

The same conjecture is made for dlt and lc pairs, and Shokurov's formulation covers all of them. It is a theorem for n≤3n\le3 and is partly known for n=4n=4. It is open for arbitrary sequences in every dimension n≥5n\ge5.

Background

The minimal model program (MMP) seeks, for a given variety or pair, a birational model on which KX+BK_X+B is nef or which carries a Mori fibre space structure. It runs by repeatedly contracting a (KX+B)(K_X+B)-negative extremal ray. Divisorial contractions decrease the Picard number, so only finitely many occur. A small contraction cannot be followed by a contraction in the same category, and is replaced by its flip. The MMP terminates exactly when every sequence of flips it produces is finite.

Existence of flips for klt pairs in all dimensions was proved by Birkar, Cascini, Hacon and McKernan, together with Hacon–McKernan [5]. Termination is therefore the main missing step in the MMP for klt pairs. Shokurov showed that termination for lc pairs in dimension nn follows from two conjectures on minimal log discrepancies in dimension nn: the ascending chain condition and lower semicontinuity. Birkar showed that the ascending chain condition for log canonical thresholds, together with existence of flips and the MMP in lower dimension, implies termination for lc pairs with KX+BK_X+B effective [6]. Kollár and Mori's book gives the standard account [9].

Claimed by OpenAI. The manuscript claims finiteness of every given sequence of generalized log canonical flips on globally Weil Q-factorial compact Kahler fourfolds with rational boundary and fixed rational nef b-divisor data. Setting the nef data to zero gives the absolute projective rational-boundary klt fourfold subcase of this target; arbitrary relative bases and real boundaries are not covered.See full solutionHide full solution
Claimed by OpenAI. The manuscript claims termination of given generalized canonical flip sequences on globally Weil Q-factorial compact Kahler fourfolds with rational boundary and fixed rational nef data. Initial log discrepancies are positive and exceptional ones at least one. With nef data zero, its absolute projective canonical subcase supports this klt target; it does not cover all klt pairs.See full solutionHide full solution
Claimed by OpenAI. Over algebraically closed characteristic-zero fields, the manuscript claims termination of every ordinary minimal model program for absolute projective log canonical fourfold pairs with rational boundary, without initial Q-factoriality or pseudo-effectivity. This includes the absolute rational-boundary klt fourfold flip sequences in this target; it does not assert all-dimensional relative termination.See full solutionHide full solution
Claimed by OpenAI. The manuscript claims termination of every maximal ordinary negative-ray program for globally Weil Q-factorial compact Kahler klt fourfold pairs with rational boundary and specified canonical datum. Its absolute projective subcase supports this flip-termination target. Endpoints are nef or Mori fiber spaces; arbitrary relative bases, real boundaries and other dimensions are not covered.See full solutionHide full solution
