Bose-Einstein Condensation in Continuum Models
“Prove that Bose-Einstein condensation occurs in a continuum model of a weakly interacting Bose gas, or determine whether the long-held assertion fails.” The question does not specify a particular continuum Hamiltonian, scaling limit, or class of states. A standard mathematical criterion in a specified sequence of bosonic states is expressed using the one-particle reduced density matrix: for normalized symmetric wave functions , let
Condensation in an orbital means that is of order ; complete condensation means that tends to the rank-one projection onto . This criterion makes the phenomenon precise once the states and limit are specified, but the question itself does not select them. Background
The problem was posed by Elliott H. Lieb in 1998 against the backdrop of experiments on dilute atomic gases and a long-standing expectation that weakly interacting bosons condense. The question then distinguished continuum gases from a special lattice result: Lieb, Kennedy, and Shastry had proved condensation for a particular lattice model. Later accounts describe the thermodynamic-limit lattice result of Dyson, Lieb, and Simon for three-dimensional hard-core bosons at half-filling, obtained by mapping to a spin system and using reflection positivity; subsequent work extended this approach to other lattice settings. Lieb, Bose-Einstein Condensation (1998) Bose gases in the Gross-Pitaevskii limit: a survey of some rigorous results (2022)
A crucial distinction is between a trapped gas in a Gross–Pitaevskii (GP) scaling and a homogeneous gas in the thermodynamic limit. In the GP regime, the particle number grows while the trap remains confining and the interaction scattering length is scaled with particle number. This is a dilute-gas limit, but it is not the fixed-density thermodynamic limit. Thus a continuum proof in a trap establishes condensation in a meaningful continuum model without settling the broader fixed-density question. Known results
Lieb, Seiringer, and Yngvason proved complete condensation for ground states in a continuum trapped-gas GP limit. In their setting, the trap potential is locally bounded and tends to infinity at spatial infinity; the pair interaction is nonnegative, radial, and of finite range. With interaction scaled so its scattering length satisfies for fixed , the normalized one-particle density matrix converges in trace-class norm to the projection onto the GP minimizer. This is a rigorous continuum result for the stated trapped scaling, not a proof in the thermodynamic limit. Bose-Einstein Condensation of Dilute Gases in Traps (2002)
A 2022 survey also reports condensation in the GP limit for approximate ground states: sequences whose energy per particle approaches the GP minimum have asymptotically all particles in the GP minimizer. For the thermodynamic limit of interacting gases, that survey identifies the rigorous lattice result as the available proof and describes progress for more general gases through renormalization-group methods. A 2025 preprint calls establishing condensation for dilute gases in this limit the most challenging mathematical problem, noting that results exist for confined gases but not, aside from a few cases described as not dilute, for the large-volume regime beyond the healing length. These dated statements distinguish established trapped-gas theorems from the unresolved broader direction; they do not by themselves establish its status after those publications. Claimed by OpenAI. Claims Bose–Einstein condensation at positive temperature in the three-dimensional dilute hard-sphere gas. For each fixed exclusion distance and every sufficiently small fixed density, there is a strictly positive temperature, independent of the volume, at which the exact canonical Gibbs state has a positive condensate fraction in the thermodynamic limit.See full solution
Scope relative to this problem: This is positive-temperature Bose-Einstein condensation in the three-dimensional dilute hard-sphere continuum gas. At each sufficiently small fixed density and fixed exclusion distance, a volume-independent strictly positive temperature yields a positive condensate fraction for the exact canonical Gibbs state in the thermodynamic limit. The fraction is not asserted to equal one at fixed positive density.

Claimed by OpenAI. Claims the full scaled Bogoliubov momentum distribution for the depleted particles in the three-dimensional hard-sphere Bose gas at zero temperature. The thermodynamic limit is taken at each fixed density before the dilute limit, uniformly over all pure and mixed ground states.See full solution
Scope relative to this problem: This is a zero-temperature companion describing the full scaled Bogoliubov momentum distribution of depleted particles in the three-dimensional hard-sphere gas, uniformly over pure and mixed ground states. The thermodynamic limit is taken at each fixed density before the dilute limit. It is related ground-state condensate/depletion progress; it does not itself establish positive-temperature condensation.

Claimed by OpenAI. For a fixed bounded nonnegative radial finite-range potential in three dimensions with positive scattering length a, the manuscript claims quantum depletion as tends to zero. The thermodynamic limit is taken at each fixed density first, uniformly over ground-state density matrices and every accumulation value. A unique occupation limit at positive density is not assumed.See full solution
Scope relative to this problem: This is zero-temperature quantum-depletion progress for a fixed bounded nonnegative radial finite-range interaction in three dimensions, with positive scattering length. The leading depleted fraction is . The thermodynamic limit precedes the dilute limit, uniformly over ground-state density matrices and accumulation values; uniqueness of a positive-density occupation limit and positive-temperature condensation are not claimed.

Claimed by OpenAI. For each fixed bounded measurable, nonnegative, radial interaction of finite range in three dimensions that is not zero almost everywhere, the manuscript claims to prove a positive lower bound on the constant-orbital condensate fraction that is uniform over all sufficiently small densities and all temperatures between zero and the square of the density. The interaction and density remain fixed in the thermodynamic limit.See full solution
Scope relative to this problem: This claims a positive lower bound for the constant-orbital condensate fraction, uniform over sufficiently small fixed densities and temperatures from zero to rho^2, for each fixed nonzero bounded measurable nonnegative radial finite-range interaction in three dimensions. The usual thermodynamic limit keeps the interaction and density fixed. The result is a positive fraction, not complete occupation of the constant orbital.

Claimed by OpenAI. Claims Bose–Einstein condensation in every ground state of a dilute three-dimensional hard-sphere Bose gas. At every sufficiently small fixed gas parameter, the constant orbital contains a positive fraction of the particles in the thermodynamic limit.See full solution
Scope relative to this problem: This claims a positive constant-orbital condensate fraction in every ground state of a three-dimensional dilute hard-sphere gas at each sufficiently small fixed gas parameter in the thermodynamic limit. It is the zero-temperature result; positive-temperature condensation and fraction exactly one at fixed positive density are not asserted.
