Weight–monodromy conjecture
Let be a non-archimedean local field with ring of integers and finite residue field of characteristic . Fix a separable closure , a prime , and a geometric Frobenius , meaning any lift of the inverse of . Let be the inertia subgroup and the -adic tame character.
Let be a proper smooth variety over and fix . Put
By Grothendieck's -adic monodromy theorem, there is a unique nilpotent map such that every in some open subgroup of acts by . The monodromy filtration is the unique increasing filtration with
It is stable under .
Conjecture (Deligne). For every such , , and , and every integer , each eigenvalue of on is an algebraic number such that
In words, the monodromy filtration, shifted by , is the weight filtration of Frobenius.
If has a proper strictly semistable model over , the conjecture is equivalent to an assertion about the Rapoport–Zink weight spectral sequence [4]. It asks that be an isomorphism for every . When has characteristic the conjecture is a theorem. The open problem is the case of characteristic , that is, finite extensions of .
Background
The conjecture is the local counterpart of the Weil conjectures. When has good reduction, inertia acts trivially, , and the statement is Deligne's theorem that is pure of weight [1, 2]. In general the monodromy operator records how degenerates. The conjecture predicts that the weights of Frobenius are determined by this purely combinatorial datum. Deligne formulated it by analogy with the limiting mixed Hodge structure of a degeneration over a disc. There the corresponding statement is a theorem of Schmid and Steenbrink.
The conjecture is central to the arithmetic of Shimura varieties and to local–global compatibility in the Langlands program. It implies that the local factors of Hasse–Weil zeta functions at primes of bad reduction are determined by the Weil–Deligne representation in a precise way. Illusie's survey [3] gives the standard account of the local monodromy theorem and the conjecture.
Equivalent formulations
Let be a discretely valued field with separable closure , let be a variety over with semistable model, and let be its weight spectral sequence. Write for the monodromy operator on this spectral sequence and on , and write for the weight filtration and for the monodromy filtration. Weight-monodromy conjecture. The top nonzero power of the monodromy operator
is an isomorphism for all . In particular, the weight filtration on coincides, up to a shift in degree, with the monodromy filtration; that is,
This conjecture asserts that the weights visible in the weight spectral sequence are governed by the nilpotent monodromy action on étale cohomology. Its status is not determined by the supplied source context.

Let be the smooth projective variety and the l-adic cohomology considered in the source. Let be its monodromy filtration, and write for the -th graded piece. Weight–monodromy conjecture. For every , the eigenvalues of Frobenius acting on are Weil numbers of weight .
The conjecture asserts that the monodromy filtration agrees with the weight filtration. Grothendieck's l-adic monodromy theorem supplies quasi-unipotence of inertia, but the stated weight prediction remains open in general.
