Steinberg's representation-theoretic conjugacy conjecture

Let GG be an algebraic group, let x,yGx,y\in G, and let ρ\rho range over the irreducible rational representations of GG. Steinberg's conjecture. The elements xx and yy are conjugate in GG if ρ(x)\rho(x) and ρ(y)\rho(y) are similar for every irreducible rational representation ρ\rho of GG. The paper cites this as a related conjecture raised by Steinberg; its resolution is not given in the supplied text.
