The type I group conjecture on cocompact amenable subgroups

Let $G$ be a second countable locally compact group. Type I group conjecture. If $G$ is type~I, then $G$ admits a cocompact amenable subgroup. This proposes a structural consequence of the type I property for locally compact groups; the source gives no resolution in general.
