The type I group conjecture on cocompact amenable subgroups

Let GG be a second countable locally compact group. Type I group conjecture. If GG is type~I, then GG admits a cocompact amenable subgroup. This proposes a structural consequence of the type I property for locally compact groups; the source gives no resolution in general.
