Critical-type conjecture for isolated representations

Let $G$ be a split classical group, and let $\pi$ be an isolated representation in the unitary dual of $G$. Critical-type conjecture. The representation $\pi$ is a subquotient of a representation of critical type. The papers cited in the source and the present paper provide evidence for this statement, but no resolution is given.
