The Cannon-boundary-action conjecture for virtual COL2 groups

Let $G$ be a word-hyperbolic group whose ideal boundary is homeomorphic to a $2$-sphere, and suppose that $G$ acts faithfully on its boundary. Virtual COL2 conjecture. $G$ is virtually $\operatorname{COL}_2$. The source says that this follows if Cannon’s conjecture holds, together with virtual fibering and the universal circle theorem in the fibering case; no unconditional resolution is given.
