The Cannon-boundary-action conjecture for virtual COL2 groups

Let GG be a word-hyperbolic group whose ideal boundary is homeomorphic to a 22-sphere, and suppose that GG acts faithfully on its boundary. Virtual COL2 conjecture. GG is virtually COL2\operatorname{COL}_2. The source says that this follows if Cannon’s conjecture holds, together with virtual fibering and the universal circle theorem in the fibering case; no unconditional resolution is given.
