Grothendieck's standard conjectures
Let be a field and let be a Weil cohomology theory for smooth projective -varieties with coefficients in a field of characteristic . Examples include -adic cohomology of for a prime , and Betti or algebraic de Rham cohomology when . Let be a smooth projective variety of dimension over .
- is the -vector space of algebraic cycles of codimension on .
- is the cycle class map, with Tate twists suppressed.
- is the -span of .
A linear map is algebraic if some cycle induces it:
Fix a smooth hyperplane section and let . By hard Lefschetz, is an isomorphism for . This gives the Lefschetz decomposition
The Lefschetz operator is defined by for and , and for primitive .
The standard conjectures assert that the following hold for every , , and as above:
- , Lefschetz type. is algebraic.
- , Künneth type. For each , the projector is algebraic. Equivalently, each Künneth component of the diagonal class is algebraic.
- , homological equals numerical. For every and every , if and only if for every .
- , Hodge type. For every with , the -valued form
is positive definite on .
In characteristic , Hodge theory proves . The open problem is the full set of assertions for all varieties over all fields. , and are open in characteristic , and all four are open in positive characteristic. [1, 2, 3]
Background
Grothendieck stated these conjectures in the mid-1960s and published them in 1969 [1]. They had two aims. The first was the Weil conjectures: and together imply the Riemann hypothesis for varieties over finite fields, by an argument modeled on Serre's Kähler analogue. The second was a theory of pure motives. Under , motives for homological equivalence coincide with numerical motives. With , the category becomes a semisimple, graded Tannakian category whose motivic Galois group is a reductive group. Kleiman's 1968 exposition [2] fixed the now-standard formulation, and his 1994 survey [3] updates it.
The conjectures are tightly linked. implies , and together with implies . Over , is induced by a Hodge class on , so the Hodge conjecture implies . Deligne proved the Weil conjectures in 1974 by other means, so the standard conjectures are now motivated chiefly by the theory of motives and algebraic cycles.
Equivalent formulations
Let be a smooth projective variety of dimension over a field , let be a Weil cohomology, and let denote the image of the cycle class map . For an ample divisor , write
Let denote the Künneth components of the diagonal in
Grothendieck's standard conjectures. The following assertions hold: (1) there exist correspondences such that is the inverse of ; (2) every Künneth component is induced by an algebraic cycle, equivalently ; and (3), for every , if for all , then .
These are Grothendieck's standard conjectures: the Lefschetz standard conjecture, the Künneth standard conjecture, and the assertion that numerical and homological equivalence coincide on algebraic cohomology classes. The paper's abstract states that it proves them for the Fano variety of lines on a smooth cubic hypersurface, but the supplied text does not specify which of the assertions is being proved or provide a resolution status for the general formulation.
